Spring is springing! Linen, crepe and airy cotton pieces are sneaking out of my storage bins after a long winters nap. And, the stores are alive with the colors of the season — dusty pinks and corals, soft yellows, baby blues and alluring aquas feel fresh and new. In Chicago – as in many other places that aren’t San Diego, Miami or Phoenix– we consider Spring and Summer our reward for enduring biting cold and knee-deep snow.
Upon seeing this rainbow of pastels on display at a local boutique, I was inspired to bring spring home with wallpapers and fabrics in the colors du saison. These pretty pastels are not the same as in years past. Pantone®, the color authority, forecasted this new emphasis on softer colors with warm tones late last year.
Our favorites among them: Watery Aquamarine (14-4313), sophisticated pretty-in-pink Strawberry Ice (16-1720), delectable buttery Custard (13-0720) and the minty glow of Lucite Green (14-5714). There’s something inspiring about them and, like this season of renewal, they are ushering in a new color palette for Spring 2015.
Incorporate delicious yellow or sea green into your décor to exude a carefree sensibility as in the above Watercolor Strie from Stacy Garcia | New York. Light blue and aqua are such quintessential seaside (or poolside!) colors that they practically scream, “Summer is almost here!” And pastels play well with white and cream, neutrals, bright colors and deeper tones, too.
My favorite this Spring: A fleur de lis wallpaper so oversized it reads like a damask from Stacy Garcia | New York. It is feminine and fresh in an array of renewed pastels like pinkish coral and greyed lavender, on a linen-like ground – and what says Spring/Summer more than linen?
Thoughts of Paris in the Spring may inspire others, but I’m happy with bringing spring right into my own home, no ironing or air travel necessary.
